New Tech Lets You Watch 3D Movies Without the Funky Glasses

New Tech Lets You Watch 3D Movies Without the Funky Glasses Someday, moviegoers may be able to watch 3D films from any seat in a theater without having to wear 3D glasses, thanks to a new kind of movie screen. The new technology, named Cinema 3D, overcomes some of the barriers to implementing glasses-free 3D viewing  on a larger scale, but it's not commercially viable yet, the researchers said when describing their findings. Although 3D movies can offer unique perspectives and experiences, one major drawback is the cumbersome eyewear that moviegoers typically have to wear. Although glasses-free 3D strategies already exist, these technologies currently cannot be scaled up to movie theaters. [ 10 Technologies That Will Transform Your Life ] For example, glasses-free 3D methods for TV sets often use a series of slits known as a parallax barrier that is placed in front of the screen. These slits allow each eye to see a different set of pixels,  creating the illusion ...

Android N Developer Preview reveals notification shade

Image
Google is doing even more with the notification shade in the latest version of Android. It's very ( very )  early days for Android N , but as we're playing around with the first release of the Developer Preview we're instantly seeing big changes on the horizon. The first and most noticeable is the new notification shade design, which makes big changes to both individual notifications and the quick toggles that we've all been so fond of in  Marshmallow . Knowing that what we see here is very likely to change throughout the process of the Developer Preview being updated, and that what we see here is currently only applicable to Nexus devices, let's dive in and see how notifications are changing with the next version of Android. First up are the notifications themselves. The base system is quite similar to that of Marshmallow, but a big handful of visual changes add up to quite a different experience. Visually, the notifications now take up the full width of ...

Google's Project Fi mobile network is now open to everyone in the US

Image
Project Fi is ditching the invite system. 10 months after Google unveiled its own mobile network, which lets consumers pay only for the amount of data they use each month, the company is opening access to everyone inside the United States. "With Project Fi, we deliver fast wireless service with the flexibility to use it where you want (even internationally) and a monthly bill that’s simple and easy to understand," wrote Simon Arscott, Fi's product manager, in a blog post. "Today, we’re excited to be exiting our invitation-only mode and opening up Project Fi so that people across the U.S. can now sign up for service without having to wait in-line for an invite." For the next month, Google is discounting the Nexus 5X down to $199 as an inexpensive way to get started with Fi, which only works with Nexus smartphones. Project Fi connects to the cellular networks of both T-Mobile and Sprint, switching between the two to offer customers the best possibl...

Image
Instagram  finally has  added the ability to easily switch from one account to another  without logging out, making life  or at least our social media life easier for those of us who  run Android blogs , have  personable pets  or  suffer from alter egos . And it's a pretty simple measure. Here's how to set things up to use multiple accounts on Android. How to add another account in Instagram for Android: First, you're actually going to need this feature to have been turned on. It appears that the multiple account feature is being pushed server-side, but we've also been receiving a few app updates of late, so it's a little hard to tell. But it appears that Instagram actually has to flip the switch on your account first. Once that's been done, here's how to add a second account: How to switch between multiple accounts on Instagram for Android Switching between the two Instagram accounts or more, actually  also is pretty...

Image
It's no surprise that Samsung is readying to announce the  Galaxy S7   and Galaxy S7 edge  on February 21 , and now the phones have both passed through the FCC. The Galaxy S7 proper will carry the model number SM-G930A, while the edge variant will be SM-G935A. Models numbers for each U.S. carrier will be slightly different, and designated by the last letter of the model number, as Samsung usually does. No other details were revealed in the FCC listings of these phones. We've already seen a number of leaks that have  revealed potential designs  but nothing has been confirmed by Samsung at this ti...

Here is the Simband, Samsung's health-tracking wearable accessory of the future

Image
When  Samsung  first revealed its health-focused wearable Simband  earlier this year , the  still-speculative device seemed more like an experiment than the futuristic wearable the company promised. That changed Wednesday when the company revealed new details about its plans for the health-monitoring wearable and announced it was  opening up  the platform to developers during the keynote presentation at Samsung's Developer Conference in San Francisco. But beyond new opportunities for developers, the company — along with a handful of early partners — also offered previews of a fully functioning and sensor-laden Simband.  here's what I found. At first glance, the Simband doesn't look much different than the company's                       Gear S  smartwatch. A thick rubber band connects to a slightly curved touchscreen display. But th e Simband is not a smartwatch at all , it isn'...
